ButcherBox Review: Is It Worth It?

I have my weekly shopping down to a routine. If you didn’t know, not only do I meal plan for my own family, I meal plan for hundreds of families all over the country! I have a monthly subscription that gives everyone a peek into what my family is eating every night of the week. Not only that, I also include individual links to each item on my grocery list so you can have all of your meal planning done and groceries ordered with just a few clicks!

I have never had a problem with the meat I buy each week at the store. From what I knew, it was good quality and my family never complained!

Until I tried ButcherBox.

I tried ButcherBox earlier this year when the meat selection at the store became a little scarce. After one month of trying ButcherBox — I want this subscription forever!

Yes, it does! And it’s AWESOME.

We get ours monthly but the frequency is entirely up to you. Everything is shipped frozen with dry ice in individual packaging. I unpack the box and place everything in the freezer. I LOVE that each chicken breast is individually frozen. How frustrating is it to thaw 6 chicken breasts stuck together?! Plus, because the packaging is so great, it is protected from freezer burn.

With this style packaging, you don’t have to meet the delivery person at your house. It will be fresh when you get home!

How Does This Work? Do I Pick What Is In My Box?

This was my first question, too! Yes, you can pick what type of meat goes into your box. Here are the options:

• Mixed Box (contains beef, chicken and pork – the most popular!)
• Beef & Pork
• Beef & Chicken
• All Beef
• Custom Box

I’ve received both the mixed box and the beef and chicken and liked them both for different reasons. But yes, you can try something different at any time.

With the first four options, you don’t get to choose what specific cuts are in your box. This felt like a downside at first, but in every box we get great cuts of meat. It is everything you would typically get at the store – nothing unusual! If you get chicken and beef, you will definitely get ribeye steaks and chicken breasts. I’ve also received a chuck roast, whole chicken, etc.!

How Much Comes in Each Box?

Each package comes in two different sizes – classic (9-14 lbs of meat) or the big box (18-26 lbs of meat). I have four kids and often have guests for dinner so I get the big box. This ensures I have enough of the same cut for everyone.

ButcherBox Meat: My Honest Review

After trying ButcherBox for several months, I can honestly say that I’m a huge fan. I didn’t realize sub-par quality of meat that I was using in my recipes prior to using ButcherBox meat. I enjoy my subscription and if I wasn’t feeding so many people (like I said, 4 kids plus guests for dinner regularly), I know I could use all of the meat in the Big Box and that would be my meat for the month! Because of how much I cook, I do need to supplement with meat from the grocery store.

Yes, I taste a difference and YES, I absolutely feel better about what I am putting in my body with 100% grass-fed beef, free range organic chicken and heritage breed pork. 

If you wanted to get this quality of meat locally, you would need to source it from a local farm or possibly from Whole Foods.

How Much Does It Cost?

I pride myself on putting together family meals and recipes that are cost effective. When I tell you the price of ButcherBox, I completely understand that this is more than you would probably spend on meat at the store.

• The Classic Box is $149 (8-11lbs of meat)
• The Big Box is $270 (16-22lbs of meat)

I know, I know. This isn’t cheap!

I completely understand that high-quality meat is a luxury and not a necessity for every family. But in my opinion, I do think it is worth it because the quality of meat is important to me. I know that not one ounce of this subscription will go to waste! We eat everything in the box every single month.
