Who doesn’t love a good hummus to share with friends! Try out these easy steps for your next gathering.

Have you ever wondered what goes into making the yummy hummus you always see at the grocery store? It’s actually really easy to make and doesn’t require a lot of ingredients at all! Most of it you can find already in your pantry ready to go and trust me when I say you can make it better than store bought. I love all the different flavors you can add to hummus to make it exactly how you like it. Some of my personal favorites are roasted garlic, red pepper, and basil pesto hummus! Add these to this recipe for more flavor and don’t be shy to experiment. Throw some pita chips in a bowl and you now have the perfect appetizer to show off to all your friends.

How to Make Hummus

Ingredients

  • 1 can chickpeas or 2 cups drained, cooked chickpeas
  • ¼ cup fresh lemon juice

  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons of water

Instructions

  1. Rinse off chickpeas and drain in a strainer.
  2. Mix all ingredients together and put into a food processor. (chickpeas, lemon juice, tahini, garlic, olive oil, salt, pepper, and water)
  3. Blend for about 5 minutes or until all chunks are smoothed out.
  4. To make it creamier add some of the chickpea liquid at the end.
  5. Taste and see if you need to add more of any ingredient.
  6. Serve with pita chips, vegetables, bread, or pretzels and enjoy!

Pro Tips

  • Slightly over cook the chickpeas before mixing them with the other ingredients. This will give your hummus the perfect texture and end in a creamier result.
  • Add a single ice cube to your blend for a fluffier outcome.
  • If you peel the chickpeas before cooking them you will get a smoother consistency. It won’t make the hummus taste any different, however the texture will turn out better!

Different Ways to Eat Hummus

I personally love hummus in its plain state but sometimes adding some extra flavor is tasty! Here are a few ways to elevate your hummus:

  • Drizzle olive oil on top.
  • Sprinkle some herbs and spices on top like cumin, cilantro, sesame seeds garlic, or chili powder.
  • Add some color with roasted beets, balsamic vinegar, red pepper, or sun-dried tomato.
  • Top with paprika or sumac!

There are so many ways to prepare your hummus and also serve it! Here are some ways to serve hummus at your next gathering:

  • Pita Chips
  • Pita bread
  • Pretzels
  • Raw vegetables
  • Spread on a sandwich or yummy cut up bread
  • Deviled eggs
  • Put on avocado toast

How to Store Hummus

Hummus can be stored in a sealed container for about a week. It’s easy enough to make so don’t worry if you don’t end up eating it all. In my family, we always finish in one sitting!
