This award winning chili and cornbread is one of my husbands very favorite meals. Even though it usually stays pretty hot here until the end of October I always try to throw in some soups here and there throughout the month of October. Then when the busy holiday months of November and December come soups are had once a week. Chili is a perfect meal to make ahead or to throw together when you are in a pinch. How to Make Award Winning Chili

Recipe for Award Winning Chili

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound ground sausage
  • 2 (15 oz) cans kidney beans (not drained) if you like it thick drain
  • 1 (15 oz) can corn (drained)
  • 1 large chopped onion
  • 1/2 cup salsa
  • 2 (15 oz) cans tomato sauce
  • 1 (15 oz) can water
  • 1 Tablespoon brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons cumin
  • 2 Tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon oregano
  • 1 teaspoon basil
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • cheese, grated
  • green onions, thinly sliced
  • sour cream

Instructions

  1. Brown ground beef and sausage.
  2. Then add seasonings to the meat.
  3. Add onions, beans, salsa, tomato sauce, water, and brown sugar and simmer on low for at least 1 hour (or you can throw into a crockpot on low for 4 hours) Then serve.
  4. Garnish with chopped onions, cheese, and sour cream.
  5. Serve and enjoy!

How to Store Chili

  • This award winning chili recipe can be made in big batches and put in the refrigerator or freezer for saving! It can last for a maximum of 3-4 days in the fridge with an airtight container or up to 4-6 months in the freezer. All you have to do it heat it up for a few minutes in the microwave and then you can enjoy it for the whole week. We love making this recipe for parties, friends, and family and it is always a huge hit!

  • 1 Tbsp brown sugar
  • 2 tsp cumin
  • 2 Tbsp chili powder
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp oregano
  • 1 tsp basil
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp pepper

optional toppings

  • cheese
  • sour cream
  • green onions

Instructions
