If you are tired of your buttermilk going bad after only one use, then learn these steps to make your very own substitute with only 2 simple ingredients!

I love using buttermilk for baking, but it’s frustrating when it goes bad so quickly and I barely get to use it. I end up always having to throw it away when it’s still completely full. Making it from scratch only takes 2 simple ingredients that most people already have in their pantry at all times! This recipe is perfect for when you are in the middle of cooking and don’t realize that your buttermilk is expired or you forgot to buy some. It is usually used to make pancakes, waffles, or biscuits and makes your food taste amazing. This substitute can also be made dairy free or vegan! Buttermilk is the cherry on top for making your recipes taste delicious so don’t ever leave it out!

 Buttermilk Substitute 3 Different Ways

There are a couple different ways to make this substitute and they all do the same thing. All of them are simple and easy to prepare and have worked for me several times when I have been missing buttermilk. Here are the listed ingredients and instructions below!

Ingredients

Option #1

  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 1 cup milk

Option #2

  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 cup milk

Option #3

  • 1 ¾ teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1 cup milk

Instructions

From these 3 methods choose one that you have the most ingredients for! My personal favorite is to use the vinegar recipe, but all of them are delicious and do the trick. Take the ingredients, whip them together, and continue with your cooking. It’s as simple as that! Most of these ingredients I guarantee you probably already had sitting in your pantry.

Make it Dairy Free or Vegan

When using the substitutes listed above, it is super easy to make it dairy free or vegan depending on your diet choice. Simply use coconut milk in the ingredients to make it dairy free or soy milk to make it vegan! Sometimes I prefer making it this way as well!

How to Store Buttermilk

Since buttermilk goes bad quickly a good way to save it for your next recipe is to freeze it! Pour it into a sealed container once you are finished and place it into the freezer. It can last up to 3 months! No need to worry about your buttermilk ever again.
